Learn about the origin of volleyball to become a better player!

By Tara B.

Volleyball is one of those sports which started the United States and has been introduced worldwide over the years.

The origin of volleyball started in Holyoke, Massachusetts by a man named William G. Morgan in 1895, at least indoor volleyball. William was an instructor at the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) who wanted to blend parts of basketball, baseball, tennis and handball together to make a sport. The sport he made was volleyball, which was called mintonette at the time. However, the origin of beach volleyball was in Santa Monica, California in the early 1920s when families played 6 on 6.

Throughout the years, indoor and outdoor volleyball has changed. The rules changed, court type, different associations and leagues. Many adult tournaments have cash prizes, especially beach volleyball in the 1980s. During the 1980s, cash prizes varied from $52,000 to $275,000 for prize totals that were spilt between different tournaments.

Indoor volleyball history and outdoor have given us the volleyball we have today. If we didn't have history, we wouldn't have removed all the flaws out of the sport and volleyball wouldn't be the same today. So, I hope everyone appreciates history just as much as I do!

It isn't just about finding out the history of volleyball, but the origin of volleyball as well. You may not think it's an important thing to know, but it's good to know about the sport you are playing!
