Banachowski Says Goodbye

It's the end of an era for UCLA. Head Coach Andy Banachowski announced his retirement after 43 years at the helm. Banachowski was UCLA's first coach and over the years he has won six national titles and coached 42 All-Americas, 98 all-conference players and one national player of the year, Natalie Williams back in 1991.

Banachowski is the winningest coach in women's volleyball with 1,106 wins, but has not had much national success of late. His last championship was 19 years ago and his team's 2006 appearance in the Final Four semis was the first and last time he'd been there since 1994.

Men's NCAA VB Round Up - Week 3

This week, the tables turned a bit on the nation's top teams and there was a bit of shuffling in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

USC still sits atop the list, but two teams plummeted several spots after unlikely losses. Pepperdine fell four spots to #11 after losing in three straight to Long Beach State in Malibu. UCI dropped three spots to #11 after losing to UC Santa Barbara in four.

UCLA enjoyed the biggest climb of the week, improving three places to #6 after beating previously #2 CSUN in three sets.

Stanford grabs the #2 spot this week even though they split in two matches against BYU last week, losing in four the first night and winning in four the second.

An Early Loss for USC

And just like that, the men's volleyball season is upon us. Pre-season tournaments were played all over the nation last weekend and this week, the season will be in full swing.

No sooner was the pre-season poll published than the #1 USC Trojans lost their first match. In a pre-season tournament, USC lost to #12 Hawaii in four sets.

But I don't think this should tarnish the Trojan star just yet. It's pretty easy to lose to Hawaii in Hawaii. The long flight, that crazy crowd, the 'Bows on fire. Plus, it is really early yet and the Trojans have lots of time to gel.

It wasn't a total loss for USC. They managed to beat #4 Penn State in the same tournament. And Penn State beat Hawaii. In fact, all four teams in the tournament ended up with a 2-1 record and Hawaii won the tournament on sets.

Looks like this could be the beginning of another strong season. Hawaii heads to #3 Stanford this week, so we'll soon see if they're the real deal.

Men's NCAA VB Round Up - Week 2

There were no surprises this week in men's volleyball unless you count the fact that #1 USC managed to beat #3 UCI in five hard-fought games in spite of being out-hit and out-blocked. After Hawaii's big win over the Trojans in Week 1, they traveled to Stanford and got beat in three sets two nights in a row. Hawaii dropped just one spot to #9 this week.

Other than that, everyone who was supposed to win did just that and therefore there are no big changes in this week's rankings.

Here are this week's games to watch:

Wed., January 20th

#8 LBSU at #1 USC

#4 UCI @#2 CSUN

#12 UCSD @ #7 Pepperdine

Fri., January 22nd

#10 UCLA @ #2 CSUN

#3 Stanford @ #5 BYU

Sat., January 23rd

#3 Stanford @ #5 BYU

#8 LBSU @#7 Pepperdine

Terrorist Strikes Volleyball Game

A rare and terrible piece of news appeared over the New Year's weekend that put the words volleyball and terrorist attack in the same sentence for the first time since I can remember.

In a village in Pakistan, about 100 people were killed and many others injured by an car bomb that exploded on a field in a residential area during a game of volleyball.

It is thought that the suicide bomber had originally planned to detonate at a meeting of tribesmen who had been cracking down on insurgents in the area.

Instead, for reasons not known, he devastated a village at a harmless neighborhood game of volleyball. Apparently, volleyball is a popular sport in Pakistan. So popular in fact, that there were reports of 200-300 people around the court watching the match at the time of the explosion. Many of the spectators were young and several of the dead were children.

Survivors spoke of how happy they were just before the bomb went off. Makes me wonder what this game was about. Was it an organized match or a pick-up game? Was it a neighborhood rivalry? Were the spectators fans?

Maybe the game was tight and the fans were animated. Maybe the home team had just scored on a massive stuff block and the crowd was going wild. Maybe the referee had been missing the block touches and some of the players were getting fed up.

I wonder what was on the minds of the players when they laced up their shoes that morning to go out and play. But mostly I wonder what it is like to live in a place where you're not safe anywhere - not even on the neighborhood volleyball court.

Fri., January 15th:
