This Week's Games to Watch Pepperdine will get the chance to prove they're worthy of a top five ranking if they can beat No. 2 USC for the second time this season. Stanford has a tough weekend ahead that will likely impact its No. 5 ranking one way or another. They're due to battle No. 3 UCLA and No. 11 UCI. Here are the rest of the games to keep an eye on this week: Thursday, February 11th Friday, February 12th Saturday, February 13th This Week's Games to Watch originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 at 17:22:45.

Dain's New Gig One of volleyball's own is making his way up the ranks in the sports broadcasting arena. Olympic beach volleyball gold medal winner Dain Blanton, the first African American to win a beach medal back in 2000, is now the Clippers sideline reporter for Prime Ticket. I caught him as he worked the sidelines of the Clippers-Cavs game, amongst King James and Shaq himself, adding a little color and some tidbits as the game progressed. The verdict? Not bad. Blanton played basketball as well as volleyball so he knows his stuff and he gets it across pretty clearly. He's still a little wordy and needs to get to the point a bit more quickly, but he's learning fast. And this week the Daily News ranked him #7 on the list of the best LA sports broadcasters. Not too shabby. Dain's New Gig originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Sunday, January 31st, 2010 at 23:49:00.
NCAA Men Mix It Up I can sum up this weekend's men's volleyball results in one word. Crazy. Lots of upsets and more than a few five game matches led to several shifts in the Coaches Poll. The most stunning upset was No. 11 Pepperdine taking it to No. 1 USC, winning in five sets to dish the Trojans their second loss and a drop to third in the national ranking. No need for the Trojans to panic. It's way too early and this could be just the kick they need to put it in high gear. Plus, it takes the pressure of being #1 off of them, which may be a gift in the long run. That wasn't the only hard-fought match this past week. No. 3 CSUN beat No. 2 Stanford in five. With that win and USC's loss, CSUN jumps into the No. 1 spot in the rankings and Stanford falls to No. 5. No. 9 Hawaii beat No. 7 UCI twice, both matches went five sets. Though UCI out-blocked, out-hit and out-dug Hawaii, their 25 serving errors to Hawaii's 12 probably made the difference in who got the W. In another huge upset, No. 5 Penn State lost to No. 16 Loyola-Chicago in five. The loss sends the Nittany Lions down in the polls to No. 8 while Loyola-Chicago jumps four spots to No. 12. Men's VB Games to Watch The battle continues for the NCAA men. No rest for the top 15 this week, they're going to have to stay consistent week-in and week-out in order to maintain their rankings. Former No. 1 plays current No. 1 this weekend with USC vs. CSUN. Winner takes the top spot next week. UC Santa Barbara, on a roll after beating UCI and Stanford will be challenged this weekend to keep it going. They are taking on Pepperdine who is coming off of a great win over USC. Then said Trojans will take on the hot-handed UCSB. Pepperdine Climbs the Ranks...But Not Very Far This past weekend, the Pepperdine Waves took down No. 1 CSUN in four games. You wouldn't know it by looking at this week's Coaches Poll which still places CSUN in the top spot and Pepperdine all the way down at No. 7. You also wouldn't know that Pepperdine is the only team that has beaten each of this week's top three teams - CSUN, USC and UCLA. So why are the Waves sitting so far down in seventh, you ask? One would have to look a little further into their record. The Waves are currently 4-4. And while the tale of their wins against more highly ranked teams looks fantastic, a look at their four losses makes them look inconsistent. The Waves took acceptable losses to UCI (then ranked No. 3, now ranked No. 11) and Long Beach State (then ranked No. 8, now ranked No. 6.) However that loss to Long Beach was in three sets and their other two losses are even less impressive. The Waves lost in five to unranked California Baptist and in four to UCSD, currently ranked No. 13. So in seventh they sit. The next round of meetings with the top teams should tell us if they deserve to be ranked higher. But if they continue to bring their A game only to matches with top teams and struggle against teams they should be beating with relative ease, they'll go nowhere in the rankings. Where they go in the playoffs, where consistently beating top teams comes in handy, well, that could be another story. Showdown at the Matadome Matches like last night's between the USC Trojans and the CSUN Matadors are when you wish that men's college volleyball had more TV time. But alas, the match between this week's new No. 1 team and the team that had been No. 1 every week previous was televised nowhere. In the end, it seems the Matadors may have the Trojans number in more ways than one. They've managed to beat USC the last 15 times they've played dating back to 2004. On this occasion, CSUN took the match in five sets to protect their new No. 1 ranking. It certainly wasn't easy this time though. Read more... And UCLA's New Head Coach Is... No more speculation required regarding who will take over as the women's head coach over in Westwood after the retirement of Andy Banachowski, the program's head for the last 43 years. UCLA decided to keep it in the family, hiring former Bruin Mike Sealy to lead the team. Sealy was a three-time All-American setter for UCLA back in the 90's and led the team to a national championship in 1993. Since then he assistant coached for both the UCLA men (2003-2006) and women (2005) before heading to Hawaii to serve as Dave Shoji's associate head coach for the last four years. I'm not surprised that UCLA decided to give it one of their own. Sealy comes to the job knowing exactly what he's walking into and what kind of legacy he's been asked to continue there. He's capable and qualified and should be able to breathe new life into the program. But for his first solo head coaching position, this one is a doozy.
