Pepperdine Does It Again When it comes to beating the top-ranked teams, no one is doing it better (or more often) than Pepperdine this season. In 2010 they've managed to beat the top-ranked teams repeatedly and in fine fashion. A few let down losses kept them outside the top five all season. That is until now. Last week the Waves took on No. 2 USC for the second time this season. And for the second time, they took the Trojans down - this time in three straight sets. Looks like Pepperdine has the hot hand, but let's hope they don't peak too early. Save some for the playoffs, guys! Pepperdine moves up three spots in this week's AVCA poll to No. 4. Despite their two wins over the Trojans, Pepperdine still doesn't outrank USC who landed at No. 3. Stanford was also on the move this week. After decisive wins over UCI (four sets) and UCLA (three sets), the Cardinal moved back into the No. 2 spot after two weeks down at No. 5. Good wins to get under their belt as they'll now hit the road for seven of their next 11 matches. Week Six Men's VB Games to Watch Stanford will get a chance to prove they deserve that No. 2 ranking this weekend. They have a tough weekend of matches ahead as they head down to LA to take on the hot-handed No. 4 Pepperdine Waves and the No. 3 USC Trojans. Here are the rest of the matches to keep an eye on this week: Wednesday, February 17th Friday, February 19th Saturday, February 20th Week Six Men's VB Games to Watch originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 at 18:32:40.

Pepperdine Climbs the Ranks...But Not Very Far This past weekend, the Pepperdine Waves took down No. 1 CSUN in four games. You wouldn't know it by looking at this week's Coaches Poll which still places CSUN in the top spot and Pepperdine all the way down at No. 7. You also wouldn't know that Pepperdine is the only team that has beaten each of this week's top three teams - CSUN, USC and UCLA. So why are the Waves sitting so far down in seventh, you ask? One would have to look a little further into their record. The Waves are currently 4-4. And while the tale of their wins against more highly ranked teams looks fantastic, a look at their four losses makes them look inconsistent. The Waves took acceptable losses to UCI (then ranked No. 3, now ranked No. 11) and Long Beach State (then ranked No. 8, now ranked No. 6.) However that loss to Long Beach was in three sets and their other two losses are even less impressive. The Waves lost in five to unranked California Baptist and in four to UCSD, currently ranked No. 13. So in seventh they sit. The next round of meetings with the top teams should tell us if they deserve to be ranked higher. But if they continue to bring their A game only to matches with top teams and struggle against teams they should be beating with relative ease, they'll go nowhere in the rankings. Where they go in the playoffs, where consistently beating top teams comes in handy, well, that could be another story. Would the Real Deal Please Stand Up... The number one ranking has changed for the third time this season in men's volleyball, but the coming weeks will make it clear who the real top team is going into the playoffs. It's the battle of the formers on Wednesday. Former No. 1 CSUN meets former No. 3 USC. Now ranked five and six respectively, the game has lost a bit of its luster, but should still be a good battle as they both teams attempt to turn things around. Then on Friday, former No. 1 CSUN will take on current No. 1 Pepperdine which could show us which team is currently the real deal. Here are the other matches to keep an eye on this week: Wednesday, February 24th Friday, February 26th Saturday, February 27 Would the Real Deal Please Stand Up... originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 at 11:42:33.

And UCLA's New Head Coach Is... No more speculation required regarding who will take over as the women's head coach over in Westwood after the retirement of Andy Banachowski, the program's head for the last 43 years. UCLA decided to keep it in the family, hiring former Bruin Mike Sealy to lead the team. Sealy was a three-time All-American setter for UCLA back in the 90's and led the team to a national championship in 1993. Since then he assistant coached for both the UCLA men (2003-2006) and women (2005) before heading to Hawaii to serve as Dave Shoji's associate head coach for the last four years. I'm not surprised that UCLA decided to give it one of their own. Sealy comes to the job knowing exactly what he's walking into and what kind of legacy he's been asked to continue there. He's capable and qualified and should be able to breathe new life into the program. But for his first solo head coaching position, this one is a doozy. AVP Announcements Minus One Two big news items out of the AVP this week. The Tour named beach VB legend Mike Dodd the league's new commissioner. He'll be responsible for overseeing "all competition, athlete welfare and sport development." Also, the 2010 tour schedule is out and it lists 12 event locations for this summer. No tourney scheduled as yet in Las Vegas this year to the chagrin of many fans and a few less tournaments than last year. Some of the details are less than solid, but it is good news that they are moving forward. One announcement that they didn't make was who their new title sponsor will be since Crocs pulled out last year. With the start of the season right around the corner that could mean trouble. Beach volleyball fans should hope that's the next announcement we hear. AVP Announcements Minus One originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 at 11:08:52.
A New Number One Trouble at the top this week. CSUN and USC have dropped out of the top three in the AVCA Coaches Poll for the first time in the regular season. With losses to UCI and UCLA, Northridge drops to 11-4 on the season and tumbles from the No. 1 spot. After three weeks at the top, the Matadors now sit at No. 5. Just behind them is former No. 3 USC. After last week's loss to No. 2 Stanford, they fell three spots to No. 6. And with that, Pepperdine finally gets to take a turn at the top, grabbing the No. 1 ranking for the first time this season. Now we'll see if they have what it takes to stay there. The only team that didn't benefit from taking down a top team last week is UCI. Despite beating the former No. 1 team in four sets, they remain at No. 11. Expect that to change in the coming weeks.
