NCAA Men Mix It Up I can sum up this weekend's men's volleyball results in one word. Crazy. Lots of upsets and more than a few five game matches led to several shifts in the Coaches Poll. The most stunning upset was No. 11 Pepperdine taking it to No. 1 USC, winning in five sets to dish the Trojans their second loss and a drop to third in the national ranking. No need for the Trojans to panic. It's way too early and this could be just the kick they need to put it in high gear. Plus, it takes the pressure of being #1 off of them, which may be a gift in the long run. That wasn't the only hard-fought match this past week. No. 3 CSUN beat No. 2 Stanford in five. With that win and USC's loss, CSUN jumps into the No. 1 spot in the rankings and Stanford falls to No. 5. No. 9 Hawaii beat No. 7 UCI twice, both matches went five sets. Though UCI out-blocked, out-hit and out-dug Hawaii, their 25 serving errors to Hawaii's 12 probably made the difference in who got the W. In another huge upset, No. 5 Penn State lost to No. 16 Loyola-Chicago in five. The loss sends the Nittany Lions down in the polls to No. 8 while Loyola-Chicago jumps four spots to No. 12. Showdown at the Matadome Matches like last night's between the USC Trojans and the CSUN Matadors are when you wish that men's college volleyball had more TV time. But alas, the match between this week's new No. 1 team and the team that had been No. 1 every week previous was televised nowhere. In the end, it seems the Matadors may have the Trojans number in more ways than one. They've managed to beat USC the last 15 times they've played dating back to 2004. On this occasion, CSUN took the match in five sets to protect their new No. 1 ranking. It certainly wasn't easy this time though. Read more... Dain's New Gig One of volleyball's own is making his way up the ranks in the sports broadcasting arena. Olympic beach volleyball gold medal winner Dain Blanton, the first African American to win a beach medal back in 2000, is now the Clippers sideline reporter for Prime Ticket. I caught him as he worked the sidelines of the Clippers-Cavs game, amongst King James and Shaq himself, adding a little color and some tidbits as the game progressed. The verdict? Not bad. Blanton played basketball as well as volleyball so he knows his stuff and he gets it across pretty clearly. He's still a little wordy and needs to get to the point a bit more quickly, but he's learning fast. And this week the Daily News ranked him #7 on the list of the best LA sports broadcasters. Not too shabby. Dain's New Gig originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Sunday, January 31st, 2010 at 23:49:00.
This Week's Men's VB Games to Watch More great match-ups are on the docket this week in men's volleyball. #2 Stanford has a tough weekend ahead with matches against a #10 UCSB team that's just coming off of an upset win over UCI followed by a match against current #3 Cal State Northridge. #7 UCI will attempt to rebound after three straight losses against ranked teams with two matches against #9 Hawaii on Oahu and #4 BYU will take on #6 UCLA in Westwood. Banachowski Says Goodbye It's the end of an era for UCLA. Head Coach Andy Banachowski announced his retirement after 43 years at the helm. Banachowski was UCLA's first coach and over the years he has won six national titles and coached 42 All-Americas, 98 all-conference players and one national player of the year, Natalie Williams back in 1991. Banachowski is the winningest coach in women's volleyball with 1,106 wins, but has not had much national success of late. His last championship was 19 years ago and his team's 2006 appearance in the Final Four semis was the first and last time he'd been there since 1994. Men's NCAA VB Round Up - Week 3 This week, the tables turned a bit on the nation's top teams and there was a bit of shuffling in the AVCA Coaches Poll. USC still sits atop the list, but two teams plummeted several spots after unlikely losses. Pepperdine fell four spots to #11 after losing in three straight to Long Beach State in Malibu. UCI dropped three spots to #11 after losing to UC Santa Barbara in four. UCLA enjoyed the biggest climb of the week, improving three places to #6 after beating previously #2 CSUN in three sets. Stanford grabs the #2 spot this week even though they split in two matches against BYU last week, losing in four the first night and winning in four the second. Men's NCAA VB Round Up - Week 2 There were no surprises this week in men's volleyball unless you count the fact that #1 USC managed to beat #3 UCI in five hard-fought games in spite of being out-hit and out-blocked. After Hawaii's big win over the Trojans in Week 1, they traveled to Stanford and got beat in three sets two nights in a row. Hawaii dropped just one spot to #9 this week. Other than that, everyone who was supposed to win did just that and therefore there are no big changes in this week's rankings. When Records Lie The reigning men's volleyball national champs are losing. A lot. Currently, the UCI Anteaters are 2-6 in their conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. As of last week they had dropped out of the top ten. But don't count these guys out just yet, because every once in a while, a team's record means absolutely nothing. This is one of those times. UCI may have lost three starters from the national championship squad, but they still have a strong crew on the floor and one of the best coaches in the game on the sidelines. Four of the six losses on UCI's record came in five set matches. In other words, they almost won. They almost beat Hawaii twice, USC once and BYU on night one. On night two against BYU, they did win - in straight sets. As we all know, almost doesn't count on a team's record. But knowing they can play with just about anybody may give them the confidence they need to conquer the latter half of the season. So don't be surprised if the Anteaters channel some of that national champion juice they had last season and put it on display over the next month or two. A little more consistency and a few less missed serves and UCI will once again be a force in the playoffs. Opponents beware.
