Banachowski Says Goodbye Banachowski was UCLA'S first women's volleyball coach and over the years he has won six national titles and coached 42 All-Americas, 98 all-conference players and one national player of the year - Natalie Williams back in 1991. He is currently the winningest coach in women's volleyball with 1,106 wins, but that record could be challenged in the near future with active coaches like Dave Shoji and Russ Rose topping the 1,000-win mark in 2009. POLL: Will Kerri and Misty Win Gold in 2012? We are in for another summer without beach volleyball's most successful duo. Kerri announced last month that she is expecting her second child. With a due date of May 30, she plans to sit out the 2010 season. Misty is planning to play this summer and will compete with a new partner. Depending on who she chooses, the domino effect of the partner shuffle could shake up the women's side. If all goes as planned the two will join forces again for the 2011 season, just in time to rack up qualification points for the Olympics. Kerri has shown how quickly she can bounce back from childbirth. She was back on the sand just over two months after delivering her first child. But with all the time apart, and the competition getting fierce internationally, can Kerri and Misty claw their way back to the top when the time comes? What do you think? An Early Loss for USC And just like that, the men's volleyball season is upon us. Pre-season tournaments were played all over the nation last weekend and this week, the season will be in full swing. No sooner was the pre-season poll published than the #1 USC Trojans lost their first match. In a pre-season tournament, USC lost to #12 Hawaii in four sets. But I don't think this should tarnish the Trojan star just yet. It's pretty easy to lose to Hawaii in Hawaii. The long flight, that crazy crowd, the 'Bows on fire. Plus, it is really early yet and the Trojans have lots of time to gel.
It wasn't a total loss for USC. They managed to beat #4 Penn State in the same tournament. And Penn State beat Hawaii. In fact, all four teams in the tournament ended up with a 2-1 record and Hawaii won the tournament on sets. Looks like this could be the beginning of another strong season. Hawaii heads to #3 Stanford this week, so we'll soon see if they're the real deal. An Early Loss for USC originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Monday, January 11th, 2010 at 20:12:54.
Ticket to Override Remember last spring when the NCAA agreed to list sand volleyball among the latest emerging sports for women? Well, it could be on the chopping block before it even gets started. This week at the NCAA convention, members will vote on whether to override the decision and remove sand volleyball from the emerging sports. Just so you know, an emerging sport is one that is recognized by the NCAA and is used to provide more athletic opportunities for women and more sponsorship opportunities for universities. Once on the list, the sport has 10 years to develop and grow to championship status or it is in danger of elimination. Support for the override vote was initially sought by Iowa State's Senior Associate Athletic Director Calli Sanders. Sanders and other opponents of the addition to sand volleyball called for the vote and are hoping to stop the sport in its tracks. Some of the arguments against are:
When it was originally introduced, the sport's addition passed by a landslide. When it was revisited by the legislative council in July, 65% of the group supported it.
So far Penn State and the Big Ten have gone on the record to say they'll vote against the sport. For the override to succeed the opponents will need to get 5/8 or 62.5% of the voters to agree.
Will the naysayers be able to convert enough of the original supporters to nix it? The outcome of this one is tough to predict. But some say the timing of the vote, during a particularly cold winter, is not in the sport's favor. I'll keep you posted.

Top Volleyball Moments 2009
It is almost time to say goodbye to 2009. So I thought I would take a look back over the year and pick out the most memorable moments for collegiate and pro volleyball.
Surprisingly, there was a lot to choose from this year considering that it was the year after the Olympics. I expected sort of a let down after the build-up and excitement of the Beijing Games, but 2009 did not disappoint. There were major upsets, unbelievable streaks and brand new records this year to keep things interesting.
Over the next two weeks I will be counting down the top five moments starting with #5 as we remember the year that was.

Terrorist Strikes Volleyball Game
A rare and terrible piece of news appeared over the New Year's weekend that put the words volleyball and terrorist attack in the same sentence for the first time since I can remember.
In a village in Pakistan, about 100 people were killed and many others injured by an car bomb that exploded on a field in a residential area during a game of volleyball.
It is thought that the suicide bomber had originally planned to detonate at a meeting of tribesmen who had been cracking down on insurgents in the area.
Instead, for reasons not known, he devastated a village at a harmless neighborhood game of volleyball. Apparently, volleyball is a popular sport in Pakistan. So popular in fact, that there were reports of 200-300 people around the court watching the match at the time of the explosion. Many of the spectators were young and several of the dead were children.
Survivors spoke of how happy they were just before the bomb went off. Makes me wonder what this game was about. Was it an organized match or a pick-up game? Was it a neighborhood rivalry? Were the spectators fans?
Maybe the game was tight and the fans were animated. Maybe the home team had just scored on a massive stuff block and the crowd was going wild. Maybe the referee had been missing the block touches and some of the players were getting fed up.
I wonder what was on the minds of the players when they laced up their shoes that morning to go out and play. But mostly I wonder what it is like to live in a place where you're not safe anywhere - not even on the neighborhood volleyball court.

Let There Be Sand
Well, it was a close one, but sand volleyball will remain on the list of emerging sports for women. Opponents of the addition failed to garner enough support to override the NCAA's decision to include the sport.
In order to block the addition of the sport, 5/8 or 62.5% of the members needed to vote in favor of the override. But today's vote only produced 58% against the inclusion of sand volleyball. The final tally was 166 to 118.
So even though the majority of voters would rather not see sand volleyball at the college level, they were just shy of the number needed to reverse the NCAA's original decision.
The 42% who are in favor of sand vb held their ground. But I'm sure this vote was a lot closer than proponents hoped it would be. Those in favor of the sport are a minority at 42%.
But none of that matters now. Sand volleyball will get added and it is up to the early adopters and the fans of the sport to broaden its reach. The next few years will be critical as we will finally see who is right about how the chips will fall for collegiate indoor, pro beach and the Olympics.
