Volleyball bows out to Hemet Bulldogs
HEMET The Hemet Bulldogs swept the Santa Ynez Pirates boys volleyball team 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 in the second round of Division IV on Thursday. They were just a little better than we were tonight, Santa Ynez coach Chip Fenenga said after his Los Padres League champions wound up 12-10 overall.

VOLLEYBALL OPEN GYM
Chillicothe seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball will have open gyms at the Chillicothe High School gymnasium from 6 to 8 p.m. July 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27, 29 and Aug. 3 and 5.

OHSAA VOLLEYBALL OFFICIALS CLASS
Anyone interested in obtaining an OHSAA Volleyball Officials License for the 2010 season should call Mike Rouse at (740) 286-2482 or by e-mailing him at mrouse@ makeyourcall.com.

Beach volleyball returns to Belmar to delight of players, fans
After winning Pro Beach Volleyballs $200,000 AVP Nivea Tour Belmar Open on the womens side, April Ross and Jennifer Kessy were in a hurry to catch a 9 p.m. flight to Norway out of JFK Airport for an upcoming international event.

Volleyball Tourney Set
A top-level beach volleyball tournament hits Long Beach this weekend with an international invite on the line for the winners. The USA Volleyball International Development Qualifier will take place at the Alamitos Beach courts next to Marina Green Park on Saturday and Sunday.

Northwest University volleyball adds four to 2010 roster
The Northwest University volleyball team has added four student-atheltes to the 2010 roster, according to a news release from the school.

W. Volleyball. Former Clemson All-American Danielle Hepburn Signs Professional Contract
Former All-American and 2008 ACC Volleyball Player of the Year Danielle Hepburn has signed a contract to play professional volleyball in France. Hepburn will join the Terville Florange Olympique Club in August. The team is located in Terville, France.

Players become teachers at Fenton Volleyball Camp
Fenton volleyball camper Logan Carter does a hitting drill Thursday. Fenton It wasnt long ago that Kennedy Piwowarczyk and Alicia Mazurek were students at the annual Fenton Volleyball Camp, run by Fenton varsity volleyball coach Linda Rusaw.

Crookston volleyball team finishes up summer season
The Crookston volleyball team completed their summer season with a fourth place finish in Hawley and third place in Fertile.

What's Up With California VB Fans?

I couldn't help asking someone from USA Volleyball this week why World League matches are rarely held in California cities. The answer was that California tends to be too expensive especially for FIVB events that have more requirements to meet. Also, no cities have really stepped up to host and when they have had events here, the crowds have been meager.

Nick and Fuerby Break Through

The AVP's fourth event in Virginia Beach last weekend put some new names in the record books when Nick Lucena and Matt Fuerbringer won their first tournament together since they joined forces earlier this year. Nick and Fuerby beat John Hyden and Sean Scott in two sets, 21-17 and 21-19.

Conference Shifting and Volleyball

The Big Ten now has twelve teams, the Big 12 now has ten teams and the Pac 10 is now at 11. Despite all the talk of a Pac-16 super conference, it seems that the 10 remaining teams of the Big 12 will stay put after all.

State of the AVP Depends on Who You Ask

To hear the AVP's website tell it, the tournament in Huntington Beach was off the chain. Canyon Ceman's recount of the tourney included a note that the 21 local sponsor booths in the event's sponsor village was the most ever and that the foot traffic was sizeable. Hans Stolfus talks about how difficult it was getting out of Huntington after the event was over, due to the huge crowds.

World League = World Cup?

As World League competition continues for the third week alongside soccer's World Cup, I'm struck by the similarities between our two sports but yet the difference in enthusiasm and coverage. There was a time in the not-so-distant past when soccer in America was at the bottom of the pro sports barrel. I don't know if anyone could have predicted that soccer would command so much attention from Americans in this lifetime. Could volleyball follow in its footsteps?

American Men Keep Hope Alive

After dropping their first two World League matches to Russia, the USA men rebounded with two four set wins over Finland. The wins bring their record to 2-2. They now sit in second place in their pool and tied with Germany for eighth overall.
