Sowers wins girls’ volleyball title (Huntington Beach Independent)
The Sowers Middle School eighth-grade girls’ volleyball team began its playoff run in the Newport-Mesa Athletic League last week with a second-place seeding in the tournament. They finished their regular season with a 6-1 record, having lost to defending-champion Dwyer.

Would the Real Deal Please Stand Up... The number one ranking has changed for the third time this season in men's volleyball, but the coming weeks will make it clear who the real top team is going into the playoffs. It's the battle of the formers on Wednesday. Former No. 1 CSUN meets former No. 3 USC. Now ranked five and six respectively, the game has lost a bit of its luster, but should still be a good battle as they both teams attempt to turn things around. Then on Friday, former No. 1 CSUN will take on current No. 1 Pepperdine which could show us which team is currently the real deal. Tough Week for the Top Dogs It was a bad week to be No. 1. In what CSUN fans can only hope was an off week, the Matadors struggled with two losses in three days. On Wednesday night they lost in four sets to UCI, who as I mentioned in an earlier post may be the best No. 11 team ever to grace the standings. Still, when you're ranked No. 1, you're expected (even if unfairly) to beat everybody. To add to their woes on Friday night, the Matadors got out to a 2-0 lead on UCLA only to lose the next three sets and thus the match. I guess you can call that progress since the first time these two met last month, UCLA beat CSUN 3-0. If CSUN hopes to retain the top ranking, their upcoming road matches are critical. On Wednesday, they are up against No. 3 USC, who is just coming off of a loss to Stanford and on Friday they are facing No. 4 Pepperdine who they lost to in four sets earlier this month. Pepperdine Does It Again When it comes to beating the top-ranked teams, no one is doing it better (or more often) than Pepperdine this season. In 2010 they've managed to beat the top-ranked teams repeatedly and in fine fashion. A few let down losses kept them outside the top five all season. That is until now. Last week the Waves took on No. 2 USC for the second time this season. And for the second time, they took the Trojans down - this time in three straight sets. Looks like Pepperdine has the hot hand, but let's hope they don't peak too early. Save some for the playoffs, guys! Pepperdine moves up three spots in this week's AVCA poll to No. 4. Despite their two wins over the Trojans, Pepperdine still doesn't outrank USC who landed at No. 3. Stanford was also on the move this week. After decisive wins over UCI (four sets) and UCLA (three sets), the Cardinal moved back into the No. 2 spot after two weeks down at No. 5. Good wins to get under their belt as they'll now hit the road for seven of their next 11 matches. And UCLA's New Head Coach Is... No more speculation required regarding who will take over as the women's head coach over in Westwood after the retirement of Andy Banachowski, the program's head for the last 43 years. UCLA decided to keep it in the family, hiring former Bruin Mike Sealy to lead the team. Sealy was a three-time All-American setter for UCLA back in the 90's and led the team to a national championship in 1993. Since then he assistant coached for both the UCLA men (2003-2006) and women (2005) before heading to Hawaii to serve as Dave Shoji's associate head coach for the last four years. I'm not surprised that UCLA decided to give it one of their own. Sealy comes to the job knowing exactly what he's walking into and what kind of legacy he's been asked to continue there. He's capable and qualified and should be able to breathe new life into the program. But for his first solo head coaching position, this one is a doozy. When Records Lie The reigning men's volleyball national champs are losing. A lot. Currently, the UCI Anteaters are 2-6 in their conference, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. As of last week they had dropped out of the top ten. But don't count these guys out just yet, because every once in a while, a team's record means absolutely nothing. This is one of those times. UCI may have lost three starters from the national championship squad, but they still have a strong crew on the floor and one of the best coaches in the game on the sidelines. Four of the six losses on UCI's record came in five set matches. In other words, they almost won. They almost beat Hawaii twice, USC once and BYU on night one. On night two against BYU, they did win - in straight sets. As we all know, almost doesn't count on a team's record. But knowing they can play with just about anybody may give them the confidence they need to conquer the latter half of the season. So don't be surprised if the Anteaters channel some of that national champion juice they had last season and put it on display over the next month or two. A little more consistency and a few less missed serves and UCI will once again be a force in the playoffs. Opponents beware.
