Games to Watch - Hawaii Comes Stateside Coming up this week in men's volleyball, Hawaiiis coming to the mainland to take on CSUN and USC. In light of the fall both of these teams have taken in the past week, these should be good matches to see how the 'Bows match up. Also, after one of the worst weeks in Westwood for a long while, the reeling Bruins will take on UCI. Now we'll see if the Bruins have any fight left in them or if UCI can capitalize on their struggles to finally move up in the rankings. No. 1 Pepperdine and No. 2 Stanford will be challenged this week by BYU and Long Beach State respectively. Both will need to win solidly to assure they keep their ranks. Here are the rest of the matches to keep an eye on this week: Wednesday, March 3rd Friday, March 5th Saturday, March 6th Monday, March 8th Games to Watch - Hawaii Comes Stateside originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 at 15:46:50.

A Big Week for Penn State The No. 9 Nittany Lions travel west this week for three big matches against two top ten teams and last year's national champs. They'll face No. 4 BYU, No. 6 Long Beach State and No. 11 UCI. Stanford took the top spot away from Pepperdine this week in the AVCA Coaches Poll. The Cardinal has this week off, so they won't have to back it up just yet. In fact, they don't face another top ten team until they see Long Beach at the end of the month. Most of the other top teams should not be challenged with their scheduled competition. USC split two matches with Hawaii on Monday and Tuesday after the 'Bows did the same with CSUN last week. With the win, Hawaii moved up three spots in the poll to No. 5. The Trojans have the rest of the week off to think about staging their late season comeback. Now would be a good time for them to start. A Weekend of Splits Four of the teams in last week's top five dropped an unexpected match last week. The only exception was No. 2 Stanford which won both matches against UCSD and Long Beach State in four sets. The rest of the field faltered a bit. After an undefeated February, No. 1 Pepperdine started March off with a 1-3 loss to BYU. They came back the next night for their revenge with a 3-0 win over the Cougars. CSUN squeaked by Hawaii on night one beating them in five sets, but struggled in a rare afternoon match the next day, losing in three. I think they'll be sticking to night games from here on out. UCLA handled Lewis 3-0 but turned around and lost to UCI 1-3. This is the third loss in four matches for the Bruins, so they may see a lower rank this week. The other squads should benefit from the across the board losses so I don't foresee the standings changing too much today. But Wait...There's More! To add to last week's announcements out of the AVP regarding the new commissioner and this summer's schedule, another piece of good news was revealed this week. We will see the Tour on TV this summer. ABC and ESPN2 will carry the finals of 13 tour events, four on ABC and nine on ESPN2. The exposure should help the Tour secure that elusive title sponsor it has yet to announce. Most of the air times are during the afternoons and early evenings on Sundays, with one tournament airing at 11 p.m. and three tournaments airing at midnight. Thank goodness for Tivo. Men's VB Round-Up Week 10 Penn State's west coast swing included face offs with UCI, Long Beach State and BYU. The 9th ranked Nittany Lions won two out of the three matches, proving that they deserve to be ranked in the top 10, but still leaving questions as to where they should be placed. Penn State just barely beat No. 11 UCI in five sets outscoring the Anteaters by only three points in the match. They then took care of No. 6 Long Beach State winning in three tight sets. Then they lost to No. 4 BYU in four sets. Seems they have some work to do to compete with the top teams, but they have the chops and could be a contender in the playoffs. Other notables - it took No. 2 Pepperdine five sets to beat No. 10 UCSB, though they sent a message in set five, beating them 15-7. No. 7 USC split two matches with No. 5 Hawaii, both matches ended in four sets. We'll see if USC can stage a comeback after a rough mid-season stretch. POLL: The Hawaiian Curtain vs. The Beijing Beast OK, let's indulge ourselves for a second. As I mentioned in an earlier blog, Mike Lambert is thinking about making a comeback to the AVP. Let's say he comes back at his best - he's the Mike Lambert of 2004-2006 before his injuries sidelined him. Now let's say Lambo went up against the Phil Dalhausser of today. Who do you think would win that battle of the big guys?
