But Wait...There's More! To add to last week's announcements out of the AVP regarding the new commissioner and this summer's schedule, another piece of good news was revealed this week. We will see the Tour on TV this summer. ABC and ESPN2 will carry the finals of 13 tour events, four on ABC and nine on ESPN2. The exposure should help the Tour secure that elusive title sponsor it has yet to announce. Most of the air times are during the afternoons and early evenings on Sundays, with one tournament airing at 11 p.m. and three tournaments airing at midnight. Thank goodness for Tivo. Tough Week for the Top Dogs It was a bad week to be No. 1. In what CSUN fans can only hope was an off week, the Matadors struggled with two losses in three days. On Wednesday night they lost in four sets to UCI, who as I mentioned in an earlier post may be the best No. 11 team ever to grace the standings. Still, when you're ranked No. 1, you're expected (even if unfairly) to beat everybody. To add to their woes on Friday night, the Matadors got out to a 2-0 lead on UCLA only to lose the next three sets and thus the match. I guess you can call that progress since the first time these two met last month, UCLA beat CSUN 3-0. If CSUN hopes to retain the top ranking, their upcoming road matches are critical. On Wednesday, they are up against No. 3 USC, who is just coming off of a loss to Stanford and on Friday they are facing No. 4 Pepperdine who they lost to in four sets earlier this month. No rest for the weary. Tough Week for the Top Dogs originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Sunday, February 21st, 2010 at 22:29:56.
A New Number One Trouble at the top this week. CSUN and USC have dropped out of the top three in the AVCA Coaches Poll for the first time in the regular season. With losses to UCI and UCLA, Northridge drops to 11-4 on the season and tumbles from the No. 1 spot. After three weeks at the top, the Matadors now sit at No. 5. Just behind them is former No. 3 USC. After last week's loss to No. 2 Stanford, they fell three spots to No. 6. And with that, Pepperdine finally gets to take a turn at the top, grabbing the No. 1 ranking for the first time this season. Now we'll see if they have what it takes to stay there. The only team that didn't benefit from taking down a top team last week is UCI. Despite beating the former No. 1 team in four sets, they remain at No. 11. Expect that to change in the coming weeks. AVP Announcements Minus One Two big news items out of the AVP this week. The Tour named beach VB legend Mike Dodd the league's new commissioner. He'll be responsible for overseeing "all competition, athlete welfare and sport development." Also, the 2010 tour schedule is out and it lists 12 event locations for this summer. No tourney scheduled as yet in Las Vegas this year to the chagrin of many fans and a few less tournaments than last year. Some of the details are less than solid, but it is good news that they are moving forward. One announcement that they didn't make was who their new title sponsor will be since Crocs pulled out last year. With the start of the season right around the corner that could mean trouble. Beach volleyball fans should hope that's the next announcement we hear. AVP Announcements Minus One originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 at 11:08:52.
Games to Watch - Hawaii Comes Stateside Coming up this week in men's volleyball, Hawaiiis coming to the mainland to take on CSUN and USC. In light of the fall both of these teams have taken in the past week, these should be good matches to see how the 'Bows match up. Also, after one of the worst weeks in Westwood for a long while, the reeling Bruins will take on UCI. Now we'll see if the Bruins have any fight left in them or if UCI can capitalize on their struggles to finally move up in the rankings. No. 1 Pepperdine and No. 2 Stanford will be challenged this week by BYU and Long Beach State respectively. Both will need to win solidly to assure they keep their ranks. Here are the rest of the matches to keep an eye on this week: Wednesday, March 3rd Friday, March 5th Saturday, March 6th Monday, March 8th Games to Watch - Hawaii Comes Stateside originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 at 15:46:50.

Pepperdine Shines, Bruins Struggle Pepperdine continued to roll over the weekend, confirming that their No. 1 ranking is deserved. They once again handled CSUN, beating them 3-1. Seems the Waves have hit their stride. CSUN beat USC for the second time this season, clearly continuing their dominance over the Trojans with their 16th consecutive win in the match up. The Matadors moved back up the ranks of the AVCA Coaches Poll to No. 3 this week. Worst weekend honors go to UCLA. The No. 3 Bruins got skunked 0-3 by both No. 9 Long Beach State and No. 14 UC San Diego. UCLA falls two spots in the poll while Long Beach jumps up three spots. Pepperdine Does It Again When it comes to beating the top-ranked teams, no one is doing it better (or more often) than Pepperdine this season. In 2010 they've managed to beat the top-ranked teams repeatedly and in fine fashion. A few let down losses kept them outside the top five all season. That is until now. Last week the Waves took on No. 2 USC for the second time this season. And for the second time, they took the Trojans down - this time in three straight sets. Looks like Pepperdine has the hot hand, but let's hope they don't peak too early. Save some for the playoffs, guys! Pepperdine moves up three spots in this week's AVCA poll to No. 4. Despite their two wins over the Trojans, Pepperdine still doesn't outrank USC who landed at No. 3. Stanford was also on the move this week. After decisive wins over UCI (four sets) and UCLA (three sets), the Cardinal moved back into the No. 2 spot after two weeks down at No. 5. Good wins to get under their belt as they'll now hit the road for seven of their next 11 matches.
