The Problem with Nick If you didn't hear the interview that Nick Lewin did on The Net Live this week, you have to take a listen. You won't believe it. The show is over two hours long, so I'll save you some time - jump to about 43 minutes into the show to hear Lewin's segment.
A New No. 1, A Long Time Coming After last Saturday's big three-set win over formerly No. 1 Penn State, Stanford predictably takes the top spot on this week's AVCA Coaches Poll. Notably, this is the first poll in which Penn State has not been the No. 1 team since the week of October 22, 2007. That could be a record in itself. Back then Penn State was ranked second behind Nebraska.
Here Comes Team USA The USA women are starting to find their stride at the World Grand Prix. Since Logan Tom rejoined the squad last week, the team has won its last six matches and catapulted from fifth place to second in the standings behind Brazil.
The Last of the 2010 Beach Season The AVP may have collapsed and the summer may be coming to an end, but you still have a few chances to catch some beach volleyball. On Saturday 8/28, the winners of the Barefoot Wine AVPNext Championship Cup will take on the Olympians in Milwaukee. The men's winner will take on Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser while the winning women's team will play Kerri Walsh and Rachel Wacholder.
Last Event, First U.S. Loss for Todd and Phil Organizers in Cincinnati put together what from all accounts was a great pro beach volleyball event without the help of the AVP this past weekend. Eight men's and eight women's pairs took to the court at Hahana Beach and played it out for a $10,000 first place prize.
One Plays Two, No TV One thing that got me a little perturbed over the weekend is that the Penn State - Stanford match was inexplicably not televised. Really? The No. 1 and No. 2 Division I women's volleyball teams face off head-to-head and not one station could broadcast it? A record-breaking win-streak was on the line and no one felt like bringing it to the masses? I find this hard to believe. This match isn't even schedule to air on tape delay as far as I can tell.
USA Women Way Ahead of Schedule Last week I mentioned how great the USA women's national team looks of late. I wrote about how they were strong and deep and maybe the best team we've ever put together. I predicted that they would do well in the Grand Prix final round, but would not get past Brazil due to their relative inexperience. Last Sunday, these women proved to be way ahead of schedule.
