USA Men Improve Each Match, Win Pool at Worlds

The men's team completed the first week of play at the World Championship in Italy with a 3-0 record and will move on to the second round starting on Thursday. They started out slowly, with an unexpected close call in their first match against Mexico. But they gained momentum as the tournament continued, beating Venezuela in three sets and then Argentina, the best competition in the pool, 3-1.

USAV to Step Into Beach VB Void

This week I called Doug Beal, USA Volleyball's CEO, to talk to him about USAV's decision to sanction the U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball despite the fact that the tournament was using the old school rules. Two teams took big tumbles in the rankings this week - Illinois fell from No. 5 to No. 9 after losing to Cincinnati in five sets and Texas fell from No. 8 to No. 12 after losing in straight sets against Texas A&M.

A New No. 1, A Long Time Coming

After last Saturday's big three-set win over formerly No. 1 Penn State, Stanford predictably takes the top spot on this week's AVCA Coaches Poll. Notably, this is the first poll in which Penn State has not been the No. 1 team since the week of October 22, 2007. That could be a record in itself. Back then Penn State was ranked second behind Nebraska.

Search Continues For New Beach VB Identity

Former AVP players proved that old school rules don't slow them down. At last weekend's U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball, side out scoring and the big court were in effect, but judging by the results, players who've been playing with those rules all summer didn't have the advantage over short court players.

If you want to see the last of this season's beach volleyball, head out to Manhattan Beach for the US Open of Beach Volleyball tournament in Manhattan Beach. Unanimous No. 1 for Stanford, Penn State Suffers Second Loss

The AVCA voters were unanimous this week. Stanford received all 60 votes for first place in the AVCA poll. The Cardinal beat Arizona in three and Arizona State in four sets over the weekend for an 11-0 record thus far this season.
