The Last of the 2010 Beach Season The AVP may have collapsed and the summer may be coming to an end, but you still have a few chances to catch some beach volleyball. On Saturday 8/28, the winners of the Barefoot Wine AVPNext Championship Cup will take on the Olympians in Milwaukee. The men's winner will take on Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser while the winning women's team will play Kerri Walsh and Rachel Wacholder.
USA Women Way Ahead of Schedule Last week I mentioned how great the USA women's national team looks of late. I wrote about how they were strong and deep and maybe the best team we've ever put together. I predicted that they would do well in the Grand Prix final round, but would not get past Brazil due to their relative inexperience. Last Sunday, these women proved to be way ahead of schedule.
USA Women 1-2 in Grand Prix The USA women's team began their annual World Grand Prix competition over the weekend. The Grand Prix is similar in format to the men's World League in that it is a month long, involves traveling every weekend to different match locations and has lots of money on the line for the winners. One major difference is they'll play no matches at home.
How "Over" Is The AVP? It's official. As of now, the AVP is done. After two weeks of limbo and waiting for word, the AVP let the staff, players and fans know on Friday the 13th of all days that the decision was made. The rest of the 2010 season is canceled. No scheduled AVP events in San Francisco, Chicago, Cincinnati, Hermosa Beach or Manhattan Beach in the coming weeks. It's over.
Of Asterisks and Immortality One question that came up in the midst of all the talk of boycotts and conspiracy theories surrounding the Manhattan Beach tournament was whether or not it was fair for this year's winners to get their names on the pier.
After all, if the top players aren't there, is it really such a feat to win? Maybe there should be an asterisk by the name of this year's winner.
Old School Rules Bring Manhattan Boycott The Manhattan Beach tournament celebrated its 50th anniversary over the weekend despite the collapse of the AVP. The long-standing beach volleyball tradition was carried on. But the weekend was not without its drama.
